5 Best Throw Pillow Styles for a Colorful Mid-Century Sofa

Lots of people are opting for colorful sofas lately, and I love it! This look can be super modern or whimsically retro.

But if you do go for a huge pop of color sofa—say, orange—how should you style it? Which styles of throw pillows look best on an orange sofa?

I got my orange couch reupholstered this year, and I’ve been testing out modern throw pillow combos. Check out the pics below to find pillow colors and styles for your colorful mid-century sofa.

Light and Bright Starburst Pillows

Using lighter, neutral colored pillows can balance out a vibrant sofa. I love how the creamy off white looks against the orange.

And it’s even better if you can find a way to tie in some mid-century modern starbursts. Pair it with a neutral linen pillow. Don’t forget a pillow insert as needed.

Scandi Black and White Pillows

Using all black and white pillows can modernize the look of your mid-century sofa, giving it a simple Scandinavian vibe.

You could also lean into the retro look and channel the 1970s with an orange and brown color combo. Layer a few textured brown pillows and throw in a fun accent pillow.

Hip Kitty Throw Pillows

Every room needs cats! If you don’t want to tone down the orange but instead want to add even more color and whimsy, pile on the kitty throw pillows.

Mod Orla Kiely Throw Pillows

This is the pillow combo I chose for my couch. You can check out more photos in my sofa reupholstery article.

I knew I wanted to use this Orla Kiely stem pillow. I LOVE Orla. The colors on this pillow help tie in the sofa with the rest of my decor. I also added a pair of soft yellow pillows to keep the look bright, cheerful and fun ’60s mod.

For the blankets, I chose a sherpa fleece and a woven throw, both with an off white and taupe color combo. They add a neutral touch to this otherwise very colorful couch.

  1. They are all great combos but the one you chose is my favorite. You can always change it up from time to time with the others if you want to. (Love the “new” orange couch….looks great and very comfy!)
